چکیده
THE CULTURE OF VERTEBRATE EMBRYOS. By D. A. T. New. New York and London, Academic Press, 1966. 245 pp. $14.00. The purpose of this book, as set forth in the introduction, is to describe available methods for the culture of vertebrate embryos and to note some experiments that have been performed on such embryos. It is intended to benefit both the research scientist and the biology teacher; the use of live material for teaching purposes is emphasized. The first chapter deals with the equipment, media, instruments, and general facilities employed in culture procedures. Since most suppliers of equipment and living animals mentioned are in England, portions of this chapter are of limited use to scientists in this country. Each following chapter deals with a separate vertebrate class: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibia, and fish. The author presents some detailed research experiments and data and also some of the mnethods employed in the study of these embryos-or of embryonic tissue. Fundamental but space-consuming details of histological processing, the importance of turning chicken eggs during incubation, methods for the measurement of CO2 and 02, the effect of temperature and humidity on the hatchability of chicken eggs, the importance of the size of a piece of meat to feed amphibia, etc. vie with the presentation of results dealing with the culture methods used for these embryos. More critical organization of the text might also have led to condensation of the book by the elimination of repetitive passages; repetition is particularly noticeable in the chapter dealing with amphibia. Each chapter ends with a description of the "stages of normal development" of the organisms discussed. Although these tables may serve some purpose by being collected into one text, their critical usefulness for the research scientist is limited, since many are presented in abbreviated form; taken together, however, they occupy 75 pages of the book. Most likely, therefore, this book will be useful to the teacher of biology in schools having limited libraries. For the research scientist, elimination of the many trite facets of research, a critical evaluation of vertebrate embryo cultures, and discussion of the factors bearing on the success and failure of the current methods would have made the book more stimulating and valuable.

Coevolution of vocal communication and sociality in primates.
Understanding the rules that link communication and social behaviour is an essential prerequisite for discerning how a communication system as complex as human language might have evolved. The comparative method offers a powerful tool for investigating the nature of these rules, since it provides a means to examine relationships between changes in communication abilities and changes in key aspe...
متن کاملSocio-Cognitive Specializations in Nonhuman Primates: Evidence from Gestural Communication
This chapter reviews primate cognitive abilities in physical, social, and communicative realms and asks (1) whether primates exhibit abilities that diff er from those of other animals, and (2) what selective pressures primates face that may have led to the emergence of specifi c cognitive abilities. The authors focus on communication as the most likely realm for primate cognitive specialization...
متن کاملConsidering the role of social dynamics and positional behavior in gestural communication research.
While the hominin fossil record cannot inform us on either the presence or extent of social and cognitive abilities that may have paved the way for the emergence of language, studying non-vocal communication among our closest living relatives, the African apes, may provide valuable information about how language originated. Although much has been learned from gestural signaling in non-human pri...
متن کاملThe communicative functions of touch in humans, nonhuman primates, and rats: a review and synthesis of the empirical research.
Although touch is one of the most neglected modalities of communication, several lines of research bear on the important communicative functions served by the modality. The authors highlighted the importance of touch by reviewing and synthesizing the literatures pertaining to the communicative functions served by touch among humans, nonhuman primates, and rats. In humans, the authors focused on...
متن کاملEye-Blink Behaviors in 71 Species of Primates
The present study was performed to investigate the associations between eye-blink behaviors and various other factors in primates. We video-recorded 141 individuals across 71 primate species and analyzed the blink rate, blink duration, and "isolated" blink ratio (i.e., blinks without eye or head movement) in relation to activity rhythms, habitat types, group size, and body size factors. The res...
متن کاملPrecursors to language: Social cognition and pragmatic inference in primates.
Despite their differences, human language and the vocal communication of nonhuman primates share many features. Both constitute forms of coordinated activity, rely on many shared neural mechanisms, and involve discrete, combinatorial cognition that includes rich pragmatic inference. These common features suggest that during evolution the ancestors of all modern primates faced similar social pro...
